How many nicotine pouches does the average user actually consume in a day? It sounds like a simple question, but consumption varies considerably between users, countries and established nicotine habits.

Available research suggests that many regular nicotine pouch users consume somewhere around 5–10 pouches per day. In Sweden, where oral nicotine products such as snus have been part of everyday life for generations, studies have reported average nicotine pouch consumption of approximately 8–9 pouches per day.

Consumption can, however, be much lower or much higher. Some people use only a few pouches during the day, while frequent users may consume 15, 20 or even more. This makes the number of pouches used per day one of the most interesting ways to understand how nicotine pouch habits differ between consumers and markets.

How Many Nicotine Pouches Per Day Does the Average User Consume?

There is currently no single global figure for the average number of nicotine pouches used per day. The category is relatively young, and usage patterns are very different depending on where the consumer lives.

However, several consumer studies give us a useful indication.

A multi-country study of nicotine pouch users in Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland found that Swedish daily users consumed an average of approximately 8.4 nicotine pouches per day. Danish daily users reported a very similar average of approximately 8 pouches per day.

Another Swedish market study conducted through Kantar found an average consumption of approximately 8.6 nicotine pouches per day among people who exclusively used nicotine pouches.

Taken together, the available research suggests that an average of roughly 8–9 pouches per day is a reasonable estimate for regular nicotine pouch users in a mature market such as Sweden.

Typical Nicotine Pouch Consumption Per Day

People use white snus in very different ways. Based on the consumption patterns reported in available European studies, daily use can broadly look something like this:

Usage Pattern Approximate Pouches Per Day
Occasional or light use 1–4 pouches
Regular use 5–10 pouches
Frequent use 11–15 pouches
High consumption 16–20+ pouches

These are not medical or official consumption categories. They simply illustrate the large differences that can exist between individual nicotine pouch users.

A European risk assessment published in 2024 also highlighted this variation. The researchers used 5 pouches per day as a low-to-moderate consumption scenario and 20 pouches per day as a high-consumption scenario, based on previously published consumer data.

In the Dutch survey referenced in that research, around 42% of people who had used nicotine pouches reported consuming fewer than five pouches per day, while a much smaller group, around 8%, reported using more than 20 pouches per day.

Nicotine Pouch Consumption Is Higher in the Nordic Countries

The Nordic countries are particularly interesting when looking at nicotine pouch consumption because products used under the lip have a much longer history there than in most other parts of the world.

Traditional Swedish snus has been used for generations, especially in Sweden and Norway. When tobacco-free nicotine pouches appeared, consumers were therefore already familiar with the format, even though the contents of the products are different.

Nicotine pouches contain nicotine but no tobacco leaf. Traditional snus contains tobacco. Nicotine pouches are also sometimes informally called white snus, particularly in Scandinavia and parts of Europe, although technically nicotine pouches and traditional snus are separate product categories.

Sweden: Around 8–9 Nicotine Pouches Per Day

Sweden provides some of the best available data on daily nicotine pouch consumption.

In the multi-country consumer study, Swedish daily nicotine pouch users consumed an average of 8.4 pouches per day. Approximately 40.7% reported consuming between 6 and 10 pouches per day, making this the largest consumption group in the Swedish sample.

Separate Swedish market research covering several quarterly surveys between 2018 and 2020 produced an almost identical result. Across the period, exclusive nicotine pouch users consumed an average of 8.6 pouches per day.

Interestingly, the same Swedish data showed higher consumption among traditional snus users. They consumed approximately 12 portions of snus per day on average, compared with approximately 8.6 nicotine pouches.

This is useful because it shows that even within the same country, consumption can differ between nicotine pouches and traditional snus.

Denmark: Around 8 Pouches Per Day Among Daily Users

Denmark showed a surprisingly similar consumption pattern among daily users.

The same multi-country study reported average consumption of approximately 8 nicotine pouches per day among Danish daily users.

Around 40.8% of Danish respondents consumed between one and five pouches per day, while 35.7% reported using between six and ten.

This means that although nicotine pouch use was less established in Denmark than in Sweden, consumers who did use the products daily showed relatively similar daily consumption.

Norway, Iceland and the Wider Nordic Market

Reliable research showing an exact average number of nicotine pouches consumed per day is more limited for Norway and Iceland. It would therefore be misleading to assign them a specific daily pouch figure.

What we do know is that oral nicotine use is particularly established across the Nordic region.

The Nordic Monitoring 2014–2024 report found that approximately 13.6% of Nordic adults used snuff or nicotine pouches daily in 2024. Daily use was particularly high in Norway, Sweden and Iceland compared with Denmark and Finland.

Norway recorded daily use of smokeless nicotine-containing products among approximately 19.3% of adults in the Nordic survey.

These figures measure the percentage of people using snus or nicotine pouches rather than the number of individual pouches they consume, but they illustrate how established the oral nicotine format has become in Northern Europe.

Why Do Nordic Users Consume More Pouches?

There is no single explanation, but the long history of snus in Scandinavia is likely an important part of the picture.

In countries such as Sweden and Norway, placing a pouch under the upper lip is not a new behaviour. Traditional portion snus had already established the basic consumption format decades before modern tobacco-free nicotine pouches became widely available.

By comparison, nicotine pouches are a much newer category in countries such as Germany, Switzerland, the UK and the United States.

This difference can also be seen in consumer research. In the multi-country European study, 1–5 pouches per day was the most common consumption level in Germany and Switzerland. Approximately 72.9% of German respondents and 61.5% of Swiss respondents fell into that category.

Sweden was different. The largest Swedish group used 6–10 pouches per day.

That suggests that established oral nicotine culture may influence how frequently nicotine pouches are used, although individual habits still vary considerably.

How Long Does a Can of Nicotine Pouches Last?

Another common question is how long a can of nicotine pouches lasts.

Most nicotine pouch cans contain approximately 20 pouches, although the exact number varies by brand and product.

Using a 20-pouch can as an example:

Pouches Used Per Day Approximate Time One 20-Pouch Can Lasts
2 pouches 10 days
5 pouches 4 days
8 pouches 2.5 days
10 pouches 2 days
20 pouches 1 day

A Swedish user consuming around the reported average of 8–9 nicotine pouches per day would therefore typically use roughly three cans per week if each can contains 20 pouches.

Does Nicotine Strength Affect How Many Pouches People Use?

Counting the number of pouches does not tell the entire story because nicotine pouch strength can differ significantly between products.

For example, eight low-strength nicotine pouches and eight strong nicotine pouches represent the same number of pouches, but not the same amount of nicotine contained in the products.

Nicotine strength may be shown as milligrams per pouch, milligrams per gram or through a brand-specific strength scale. Because pouch weight also varies between products, consumers should check the actual nicotine information on the product rather than relying only on strength labels such as Strong or Extra Strong.

There is not yet enough research to say that people who choose stronger nicotine pouches will automatically consume fewer pouches during the day. Individual tolerance, habits, product format and how long each pouch is used can all influence consumption.

How Long Do People Keep a Nicotine Pouch In?

Daily consumption is also affected by how long each pouch is used.

Consumer research has shown considerable differences between countries. In several markets, usage periods around 10–20 minutes were common, while Swedish consumers frequently reported keeping a pouch in for longer periods, sometimes between 20 and 60 minutes.

Someone using each pouch for a longer period may naturally go through fewer pouches during the day than someone replacing them more frequently. This is another reason why the number of pouches consumed per day varies so much between individuals.

Nicotine Pouches vs Snus: How Does Daily Consumption Compare?

Swedish data provide one of the clearest direct comparisons between snus and nicotine pouches.

Across Swedish consumer surveys, traditional snus users consumed approximately 12 portions per day, while exclusive nicotine pouch users consumed approximately 8.6 pouches per day.

That does not mean every snus user consumes more than every nicotine pouch user. These numbers represent averages across surveyed populations.

It does, however, demonstrate why terms such as snus, white snus and nicotine pouches should not automatically be treated as identical when comparing consumption statistics.

So, How Many Nicotine Pouches Do People Use Per Day?

There is no universal number that applies to every nicotine pouch user.

Based on the research currently available, however, a useful general estimate for regular users is around 5–10 nicotine pouches per day.

Sweden sits toward the higher end of this range, with multiple studies reporting average daily nicotine pouch consumption of approximately 8.4–8.6 pouches. Denmark has produced similar results at around 8 pouches per day among daily users.

Some consumers use considerably fewer, while frequent users can consume 15, 20 or more pouches per day.

The Nordic countries are particularly interesting because of their long history with Swedish snus and other oral nicotine products. This established culture appears alongside both higher prevalence of daily oral nicotine use and, in the countries where detailed consumption data are available, relatively frequent nicotine pouch use.

Frequently Asked Questions
